EAP briefly explained
Extended outpatient physiotherapy (EAP) is an intensive, multidisciplinary treatment program that has been specifically designed for patients after accidents or with serious orthopedic conditions. As part of EAP, patients receive a combination of various therapeutic measures. These include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical training therapy and manual therapy, adapted to the patient's individual needs and goals.
What you as a patient should know about EAP!
Extended outpatient physiotherapy (EAP) is specifically aimed at patients who have suffered injuries or illnesses related to an occupational accident. These intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs are designed to provide comprehensive support to people after work-related accidents. EAP includes a combination of various therapeutic measures - including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medical training therapy - that are individually tailored to the needs of each patient.
Our goal is to enable our patients to recover quickly and regain their ability to work. The treatment is carried out in close cooperation with the professional associations (BG), which cover the costs of the EAP if the treatment is necessary due to an accident at work.
For a successful EAP, a referral from the treating doctor and a declaration of reimbursement from the responsible professional association are required. We work closely with you to make the rehabilitation process as effective and smooth as possible, with the aim of returning you safely and successfully to your working life.
The prescription of extended outpatient physiotherapy (EAP) is indicated when it becomes apparent that conventional standard therapies are not sufficient for recovery. This specialized treatment may only be prescribed by a general practitioner (D-doctor) who is authorized by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) and is included in their D-doctor list. Privately insured patients can use EAP using a private prescription.
The aim of EAP is to promote a rapid and effective recovery of physical functions in order to enable patients to return to work or everyday life. Compared to conventional outpatient physiotherapy, EAP is characterized by a higher level of intensity and close interdisciplinary cooperation within the treatment team. EAP is usually financed by accident insurance or pension insurance providers when appropriate indications exist.
Extended outpatient physiotherapy (EAP) proves to be particularly useful in the following situations:
In the case of complex or serious injuries: particularly after work or sports accidents, when multiple areas of the body are affected or require special, more intensive rehabilitation measures.
After surgical procedures: EAP supports the healing process after orthopedic operations, for example joint replacement or ligament reconstruction, to ensure optimal restoration of function.
In chronic pain conditions: When standard therapies do not produce significant improvement, EAP can help relieve pain and improve function through an intensive and multidisciplinary approach.
For a quick return to work: Especially in the case of work-related injuries, where rapid and effective rehabilitation is crucial to restore working ability and quality of life.
What you as a doctor should know about EAP!
EAP is particularly suitable for patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal diseases as well as after accidents and operations. Typical indications are disc problems, cruciate ligament tears, shoulder injuries and fractures.
As a referral doctor, you can prescribe EAP as part of the occupational health insurance treatment procedures. The prescription is usually made after a comprehensive examination and diagnosis to ensure that EAP is the appropriate treatment method.
EAP combines various therapeutic approaches such as:
physical therapy
Occupational therapy
Sports therapy
Medical trainings therapy
Psychological support (if required)
The EAP enables more intensive and individualized care by an interdisciplinary team. This means that therapy goals can be achieved more quickly and patients' ability to work can be restored more quickly.
The duration of EAP varies depending on the severity of the injury and the individual progress of the patient. Typically, treatment lasts several weeks to months, with several sessions per week.
The EAP is billed through the accident insurance providers (professional associations). As the prescribing doctor, you must submit the relevant forms and documents to ensure that the costs are covered.
The prescriber remains in close contact with the interdisciplinary team throughout EAP treatment, monitoring the patient's progress and adjusting therapy plans as necessary.

Things to know before your treatment
We recommend sports clothing such as shorts or a T-shirt/top, as well as sports shoes that are suitable for the training area. It is important that you can move easily in the clothing.
The duration of EAP (Extended Outpatient Physiotherapy) treatment can vary depending on the individual needs of the patient and the severity of the injury or illness. EAP treatment is usually designed for an intensive period that can be between 2 and 6 weeks. During this time, therapy sessions take place several times a week to ensure optimal rehabilitation. However, it is important to note that the exact time frame depends on the recommendation of the treating doctor and the specific requirements of the rehabilitation plan. Close coordination with the treating specialists is therefore essential in order to optimize the individual course of therapy.
To make your visit with us as smooth and pleasant as possible, we would like to take a few preparatory steps with you. This gives us the time we need to make all the necessary preparations in peace and quiet and then provide you with the best possible care.
We look forward to supporting you and thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
In general, it is important for your body and your health to drink enough water. To ensure the treatment is successful, we recommend that you pay particular attention to this before and after treatment. You should also avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before treatment, if this is possible for you.
Next steps after your treatment
You may experience slight discomfort or muscle soreness after your appointment. But don't worry, this is completely normal for a few days after the treatment. Your body is processing the therapy or training stimulus.
Your body needs to recover after treatment/workout. Drink plenty of water to help your pain area recover. The same goes for sleep . Try your best to get a good night's rest after your treatment.
